Student Art Club Exhibits Work at Piedmont Arts

On Tuesday, June2, 2010, the Martinsville Middle School After School Art Club, along with Piedmont Arts and Studio 107, held a reception showcasing works by the 15 students who participated in the club during the school year. Retired teacher and program coordinator, Sandra Cox addressed a crowd of around 50 students, parents, instructors and school board members congratulating the students on their success and thanking the artists and all those who participated in the club. The reception also served as a celebration of a $500 grant, written by Pat Walmsley, and a 2010 Excellence in Education Award that the After School Art Club received through the Virginia Tech School of Education this May. The program was one of nine selected winners from among nearly 40 education initiatives submitted throughout Virginia.

The After School Art Club members work with local artists to learn a wide variety of arts and crafts techniques. Their instructors include: John Matthews, John Christian and Jane Iten as well as Lynn Berry, Aleen Wilson, Terry Mitchell, Mary Powell, Ariya Martin, Karen Colletti and Kara Carter–Hundley from Studio 107.

The After School Art Club’s exhibit features drawings, ceramics, jewelry, stained glass, painting and textiles. Many of the works are for sale. The exhibit is open to the public and will be on display in Piedmont Arts' Frith Performance Hall through Thursday, June 3, 2010.
