Celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Piedmont Arts
This October, Piedmont Arts celebrates National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an exhibit and fundraiser supporting a local breast cancer screening program.
Curtis Brown, a photographer from Raleigh, NC, created the exhibit, Weight of the Ribbon, as an homage to his grandmother’s struggle with breast cancer. His photographs reflect the emotional journeys of breast cancer victims in their battles against the disease; from moments of strength and triumph to moments of defense and collapse. Dancers from the Carolina Ballet used their artistic talents to translate the photographer’s concept into visual form through distinct expression and movement. A trained performer, it is Brown’s extensive background in dance and theatrical work that makes him uniquely capable of understanding and capturing the strength, stamina and beauty of dancers through photographs.
Labeled an “industrial tour de force” in the world of artistic portraiture, Brown has completed projects from New York to Los Angeles. He has photographed regional theatre companies, Broadway national tours, classical ballet companies and Broadway talent. Along with Weight of the Ribbon, one of Brown’s most passionate and innovative series, The Vote Against Project for equality in North Carolina, will also be on display at Piedmont Arts.
In addition to Brown’s exhibits, photographs by Eden, NC artist Debra Alcorn will also be on display in the Lynwood Artists Gallery. Alcorn’s exhibit, Making a Splash, focuses on “splashes” of color captured by the artist’s lens.
Weight of the Ribbon, The Vote Against Project and Making a Splash will be on display at Piedmont Arts from Oct. 5 – Nov. 30, 2013. As always, Piedmont Arts exhibits are admission free through the membership support of people like you. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday from 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am – 3 pm.
A Members-Only Reception will be held in honor of these exhibits on Friday, Oct. 4 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at Piedmont Arts. Piedmont Arts members and guests are invited to attend this admission-free reception, sponsored by Lee Ann and Frank Fuller, Judy Hodge, Lauren and Dan Prince, James E. Rountree, Sr. and Lynwood Artists. Light refreshments will be served. Babysitting is available for $5 per child by RSVP only. RSVP here.
On Friday, Oct. 11, Piedmont Arts will host the Pink Party, a fundraiser supporting the museum and Ladies First, a nonprofit organization that provides breast cancer education and screenings to women in Martinsville and Henry County. Local cooks will prepare and serve heavy hors d'oeuvre and guests can enjoy music, a champagne fountain and cash bar featuring a signature pink cocktail. Guests may also participate in a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds supporting Ladies First. Past 50/50 raffles have raised pots of up to $6,000. Creative cocktail attire with an emphasis on pink is encouraged.
Tickets to the Pink Party are $25 per person and include two drink tickets. Purchase event tickets here.
Piedmont Arts’ Pink Party is generously sponsored by BB&T Wealth Management, Memorial Hospital, American National Bank & Trust, Suzanne and Rusty Lacy and Barbara and Andy Parker.
