Piedmont Arts Explores "Fahrenheit 451" with Performance and Programs
This fall, Piedmont Arts examines the history of literary censorship and the effects of mass media on culture with a theatrical performance and other programs exploring themes from Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451.
Bradbury’s book tells the story of a society gone awry. Citizens are obsessed with trivial television shows while firemen work diligently, not to save burning homes, but to seek out and burn books, all of which have been banned to prevent the spread of ideas. Though Bradbury’s concept may seem extreme, books have been banned for centuries and are still banned today for varying reasons, including the ideas they promote, the language contained therein or the political views of the author.
Piedmont Arts Director of Programs Barbara Parker says it is important to investigate censorship and the effects of mass media on culture because of the prevalence of disinformation in today’s society. “In this age of sensory overload we have to take a step back and think about what we are being told…whether it’s true or not and why. It’s important to make that distinction. Bradbury’s greatest fear was that television would take away our ability to think for ourselves. We hope these programs will encourage people to evaluate what they hear before accepting it as truth.”
As the highlight of Piedmont Arts' Fahrenheit 451 programming, Aquila Theatre, New York's premiere traveling theatre company, will bring Bradbury's novel to life with a theatrical performance on Thursday, November 14, as part of Piedmont Arts' On Stage performing arts series. "Aquila brings an innovative, modern touch to Fahrenheit," said Parker. "And the novel was adapted for the stage by Bradbury himself, making it just as engaging as the book."
Tickets to Piedmont Arts On Stage presents Fahrenheit 451 are $25 for reserved seats, $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and are on sale here and Piedmont Arts. This tour engagement of Aquila Theatre Company is funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours programs of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
