On July 17, the June German Ball Mural was unveiled during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the City of Martinsville's newest pocket park, Fayette Square. The mural was designed and painted by Abigail Kieselbach and Briana Amos, interns participating in the New College Institute's summer internship program; local artists Charles Hill, Iris Gillispie and Lex Hairston; Piedmont Arts intern, Ally Sneed; New College Institute's Coordinator of Experimental Learning, Katie Croft; and Piedmont Arts' Director of Marketing, Communications and Design, Bernadette Moore.
"We are very excited to be part of such a community-enriching project," said Moore, who oversees Piedmont Arts' public art program. "The June German Ball mural really captures the essence of vitality and togetherness that is so present in MHC. Our local artists, Charles Hill, Iris Gillispie and Lex Hairston did a wonderful job supporting the NCI interns through this process and the mural now has a perfect home at Fayette Square. We hope the community will really embrace the city's pocket parks and continue to lend support to public art projects that will help enhance the city's visual landscape in the future."
The June German Ball mural is the fifth mural to be installed in Martinsville-Henry County as part of Piedmont Arts' public art program, which is designed to introduce art into the everyday landscape. The program engages local and regional artists, whose work adds to the scenic beauty of our community. To date, over 11 artists have installed six sculptures and five murals in Martinsville-Henry County as part of this program.
