Work by seven Roanoke artists on display at museum

Celebrating the 25th year of Roanoke’s The Studio School, Piedmont Arts' newest exhibit, Creative Flow, features work by Studio School faculty members Judy Bates, Tracy Budd, Vera Dickerson, Michael Farrar, Jane Winders Frank, Gina Louthian-Stanley and Robin Poteet.

"Creative Flow expresses how we feel about teaching and learning in our school," said Studio School instructor and exhibiting artist Vera Dickerson. "We teachers bring in ideas and talk about technique and the elements of art. And we all learn from our classes as they take the ideas and transform them to make the outcome very personal. The flow goes back and forth and forms such a wonderful atmosphere of energy that the title for our show came easily. It describes our philosophy and our product."

A part of the Roanoke Valley since 1990, The Studio School offers classes for artists of all levels. The school also organizes group trips to painting locations, galleries and museums in Roanoke and other cities across the country and the world. The teaching schedule also Includes a busy children’s program held after school and on Saturdays.

"The Studio School has a long tradition of arts education in the Roanoke Valley," said Piedmont Arts Director of Exhibitions Heidi Pinkston. "Not only has the school helped lead the way in arts instruction for adults, but former students and instructors help give back to the community by fostering a love of art in area youth, as well. We are honored to show the work of these stellar artists, many of whom have exhibited around the country and internationally."

New Daisy Santa Barbara, Renwick Morrison
Works by Martinsville artist, Renwick Morrison, will also be on display in the museum's Lynwood Artists Gallery. Morrison has won several awards for his paintings, including multiple honors at Piedmont Arts' and Lynwood Artists' annual open-entry exhibition, Expressions.

"Renwick is an amazing artist," said Betty Blessin, vice president of Lynwood Artists and curator of the Lynwood Artists Gallery. "His work is colorful, expressive and meticulous. Though many Piedmont Arts' visitors may be familiar with his work, we are excited that this exhibit will expose them to his new pieces on a larger scale."
