Cub Scouts Earn Art Badge at Piedmont Arts

Tiger Scouts from Cub Scout Den 15 Pack 564 from Mount Airy, NC visited Piedmont Arts today to earn their den’s Art Badge in Abstract Art.

Pack leader Matt Edwards, along with 12 Cub Scouts and 10 parents toured the museum’s galleries, getting a first-hand look at different types of artwork, including woodcut prints, oil and acrylic paintings, and the decorative arts of Africa in the museum’s exhibit, Fortune, Courage, Love: Arts of Africa’s Akan and Kuba Kingdoms from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

After exploring the galleries, den members participated in two art-making activities: an abstract line project, where each Scout followed directions to create various shapes and different forms of lines; and a free paint focusing on abstract themes.

“The Scouts were eager to learn about abstract art, as well as learning about the Fortune, Courage, Love exhibit,” said Piedmont Arts Education Coordinator Brian Stanley. “Each Scout spent time learning about the difference between abstract art and realism. Once the students learned the basic principles of line, shape and color we went to the classroom where they got to practice their new knowledge. Each student was able to take the ideas from the tour and inspiration from the artwork they saw to create two pieces of their own.”

The Scouts are now able to check off their Art Badge requirements, which include visiting an art gallery or museum and creating two original pieces of art using shapes.
