Funds from Savory September: India to help children in need

Piedmont Arts recently made a donation to the Akshaya Patra Foundation, a secular non-profit organization, which implements the world’s largest managed mid-day meal program in India.

“The Piedmont Arts Board of Directors elected to use a portion of its proceeds from Savory September: India to make a donation to Akshaya Patra Foundation,” said Board President Jared Cotton. “The $250 donation will be used to feed children who are living in poverty in India.”

According to the organization’s website, “Our meals, a strategic intervention, give children an incentive to continue school (and an alternative to working to eat). The meal, meanwhile, provides them with the necessary nutrition to develop cognitive abilities and to focus on learning. Akshaya Patra's program has increased school enrollment (especially for girls), increased school attendance and retention and improved performance and health in children.”
