"Indigenous: The Art of the American Indian" Opening Aug. 12
Exhibit features work by five American Indian artists, artifacts
Piedmont Arts is pleased to present, Indigenous: The Art of the American Indian, a major exhibition highlighting American Indian art never before seen by our community. The exhibition honors the culture, history and art of several American Indian tribes, including the Cherokee, Haliwa-Saponi and Piscataway, among others.
Indigenous features artwork by five contemporary American Indian artists from northeastern North Carolina: Karen Lynch Harley, Phillip Harley, Running Deer Harley, Senora Richardson Lynch and Arnold Richardson; a photographic history of The Trail of Tears on loan from the Museum of the Cherokee Indian; and American Indian artifacts on loan from the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Mervyn King.
This exhibit explores various forms of American Indian art, from pottery to painting to wood carving, while presenting archival elements that demonstrate the works’ significance in art history.
In addition, Opposite of Left: Two Generations of Visual Interpretations, featuring mixed media paintings and sculptures by Martinsville natives Mark Wright and Brad Wright, will be on display in the Lynwood Artists Gallery.
Indigenous and Opposite of Left will be on view August 12 – October 14, 2017 at Piedmont Arts. Museum hours are Tuesday – Friday from 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am – 3 pm. Admission is free.
