Join Piedmont Arts for Modern Art: Native American Style, a free art talk examining the contributions of Native Americans to the modern art movement, on Thursday, September 14 at 7 pm at the museum. 

Jeanette Nicewinter, PhD, a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Speaker on the Arts, will examine the way Native American artists participated in the Mid-Century modern art scene (c. 1933 – 1965), which was exemplified by an abstract aesthetic that emphasized the materiality of the work.

Numerous Native American artists, such as Kay Walkingstick, engaged with the rhetoric surrounding modern art, but their self-identity as Native Americans often overshadows their contribution to the movement. Nicewinter will discuss how these artists found their identities as both Native Americans and modern artists.

Before the talk, guests will have the opportunity to view contemporary art by Native American artists on display in the museum’s current exhibit, Indigenous: The Art of the American Indian.
