Piedmont Arts Brings Brass 5's 'Why Music?' to Local Schools

Brass 5, the Star City’s favorite brass quintet, brought their signature high-energy style to educational programs at Albert Harris and Patrick Henry Elementary schools on October 8, as part of Piedmont Arts’ Educational Outreach Program.

The group, which has been performing and educating students about all things brass for over 30 years, performed the program, Why Music? – an exploration of just how and why music is such an integral and important part of our lives.

With over 3,000 educational performances under their belts, the members of Brass 5 definitely know how to reach young audiences. The group works together each year to develop a new educational program for K-12 students. Utilizing the public school teaching experience of its members, the programs relate musical selections to school curriculum in a fun format.

This marks the tenth year Piedmont Arts has sponsored performances by Brass 5 in Martinsville-Henry County schools.

“We love bringing Brass 5 into our schools,” said Education Coordinator Becki Williams Vasquez. “Their programs get students excited about music and how it can impact and shape our lives.”
Piedmont Arts will bring Brass 5 back to the community on October 29, when students at Campbell Court and Stanleytown elementary schools will experience in-school programs by the group.

Brass 5's performances are sponsored by Piedmont Arts with assistance from Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
