"A Beautifully Broken Virginia” Highlights Abandoned Places Across Commonwealth

Experience a unique photographic journey through the beautifully decaying rural places within the commonwealth at A Beautifully Broken Virginia, an art talk presented by Piedmont Arts on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the museum.

A Beautifully Broken Virginia brings the “unseen” side of Virginia to light through photographs of houses, churches, schools, asylums, diners and secret societies that have been frozen in time.

Photographer John Plashal has commemorated these abandoned gems by capturing their beauty and highlighting them in a presentation full of powerful imagery and emotional stories. Plashal spends a considerable amount of his free time assimilating into rural communities in Virginia with the goal of tapping into local knowledge in order to identify, photograph and document places that offer beauty in decay and unique histories. Plashal will also offer exploration tips and photography advice.

A Beautifully Broken Virginia is part of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Speakers on the Arts program, available to Statewide Partners of the VMFA.
