New Exhibits Opening March 20: 16 Hands + Davis Choun

Ellen Shankin, Nested Soy Bottle, from 16 Hands: Two Generations, Working Together

New exhibits featuring crafts by 16 Hands and works by Davis Choun will be on display March 21 – April 25, 2020 at Piedmont Arts.

Two Generations, Working Together features work by members of 16 Hands, an enclave of craftspeople nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Floyd, Virginia. Drawn to the area by its beauty and tranquility, the group established working studios, vital careers and a way of life. Over the past 25 years, they have solidified deep friendships as well as a network of creative, technical and professional support. This exhibit features work by 16 Hands members Ellen Shankin, Brad Warstler, Silvie Granatelli, Benjie Osborne, Josh Manning, Donna Polseno, Hona Knudsen, Wendy Werstlein, Sarah McCarthy, Seth Guzovsky, Andrea Denniston and Josh Copus.

Continuity (Color + Texture) features work by Raleigh, North Carolina-based artist Davis Choun. Choun is a process oriented artist, whose work is born out of an attraction to benign or discarded materials and a process of manipulations. His work relies on improvisation and continuity. The works in his exhibit were created by disassembling, burning, staining and dying wooden clothespins, then reassembling them in an improvised configuration. Choun’s works are not about the clothespins or what they represent, but more a question of what can become of 5,000 intriguingly cut pieces of wood when arranged on a panel.

Dreaming Geometry: An Artistic Exploration of Mathematics, featuring work by Jon Handy, will be on display in the Lynwood Artists Gallery.
